Varieties of Sago Palm in Indonesia

Indonesia is home to a wide range of sago palm varieties, each exhibiting distinct morphological characteristics and production potential. The following are some of the most commonly found types.

  1. Runggamanu (Tuni)

Tuni sago palms can grow to a height of 10–15 meters, with trunk bark thickness ranging from 2–3 cm. The leaves are dark green, supported by yellowish-green petioles measuring approximately 6.85 m in length, while the leaf sheaths reach about 2.71 m. The petioles are covered with spines from the base to the tip, particularly in young plants where the spines are very dense.

Each petiole bears 100–200 leaflets measuring 151–155 cm in length and 8.1–9.1 cm in width. In Southeast Sulawesi, this variety can produce 250–300 kg of flour per tree, making it the largest and one of the highest-yielding sago varieties.

  1. Roe (Molat)

This variety has a trunk height of 10–14 meters with a diameter of 40–60 cm and a trunk weight exceeding 1.2 tons. It is spineless; however, the long leaves with sharply pointed tips can still cause injury. The spacing between leaves is relatively wide, with petioles measuring 4–6 m in length and leaf blades approximately 1.5 m long and 7 cm wide.

The inflorescences are compound and reddish-brown in color. The pith is white, soft, and accounts for about 80% of the trunk weight, containing approximately 18% starch. A single tree can yield around 800 kg of wet starch or about 200 kg of dry starch.

  1. Barowila

Barowila sago palms grow to a height of approximately 10 m, with trunk diameters ranging from 40–50 cm. The leaf sheaths are pale green, while the pith is white and soft. Dry starch production per tree averages around 120 kg, which is lower than that of other varieties.

  1. Rui (Rotan)

This variety has a relatively short trunk, averaging 7.2 m in height with a diameter of about 40 cm. The petioles reach approximately 6.07 m in length, while the leaf sheaths measure around 3.56 m. Each petiole carries 100–200 green leaflets measuring 130–147 cm in length and 6–7 cm in width.

The pith is relatively hard, fibrous, reddish in color, and produces the lowest starch yield among the known sago varieties.

General Classification of Sago Palm

Botanically, sago palms are classified into two main groups:

  1. Hapaxanthic

These palms flower and fruit only once before dying. This group has high economic value due to its abundant starch content. Examples include:

  • Metroxylon rumphii Mart.
  • Metroxylon micracanthum Mart.
  • Metroxylon longispinum Mart.
  • Metroxylon sylvestre Mart.

  1. Pleonanthic

These palms are capable of flowering and fruiting repeatedly; however, their starch content is relatively low. Species in this group include Metroxylon filarae and Metroxylon elatum, which typically grow in highland areas.
