Measurement results indicate that 9-year-old Tuni/Runggamanu sago palms grown in tidal areas had a productive trunk weight of 1,159.07 kg per tree. This figure was slightly lower than that of palms cultivated in swampy land, which reached 1,269.46 kg per tree.

However, at the age of 10 years, the comparison was reversed. Tuni sago grown in tidal environments recorded a higher trunk weight of 1,304.50 kg per tree, surpassing those grown in swamp areas, which averaged 1,297.53 kg per tree.

In contrast, Molat/Roe sago palms harvested at 12 years of age showed a consistent pattern: plants cultivated in swampy land exhibited superior growth. Their trunk weight reached 1,875.64 kg per tree, significantly higher than those grown in tidal zones, which averaged 1,531.54 kg per tree. These data reinforce the conclusion that the Molat variety performs more optimally in wet and waterlogged environments.

Flour Production Capacity: Molat’s Superiority and Tuni’s Flexibility

In terms of flour production, Molat/Roe sago demonstrates clear advantages. Historical data from Manuputy and Soeryono indicate that a single tree can produce approximately 800 kg of wet starch, which yields around 200 kg of dried starch after processing. Furthermore, according to Tenda and colleagues, this potential may increase to as much as 400 kg of dried starch per tree.

Although Tuni/Runggamanu sago exhibits a more variable yield range—between 170 and 500 kg of dried starch per tree—it is recognized as one of the larger sago varieties. Its substantial trunk size allows for considerable production potential, particularly when supported by proper cultivation techniques.

Sago naturally thrives in moist soils and wet environments. Consequently, swamps, tidal areas, and permanently waterlogged lands constitute its ideal habitats. The availability of water throughout the year supports plant metabolic processes and accelerates starch accumulation within the trunk.
