Sembaro Village: Preserving Tradition and Wisdom in Sago Cultivation

Sembaro Village is one of the regions that remains faithful to the culture of sago farming, passed down through generations. The village comprises five well-known sago-producing hamlets: Sein, Sefru, Sahar, Sembaro, and Atfanges. Each hamlet serves as a center for sago management, which to this day is carried out collectively by the indigenous community with a spirit of togetherness.

Land Selection Based on Local Wisdom

The people of Sembaro do not choose planting locations at random. Knowledge passed down through generations teaches that the best land is an open area free of large trees, ensuring sago seedlings receive full sunlight. Additionally, proximity to a water source is an absolute requirement, as moist, water-rich soil is the primary key to lush sago growth.

The climate in this region further supports cultivation: annual rainfall ranges from 2,000–4,000 mm, with an average temperature of 24–30°C and humidity around 60%. The most ideal temperature for sago growth sits between 24.5–29°C.

A Planting Process Steeped in Philosophy

Before planting, the land is cleared and simple planting holes are prepared. Seedlings are placed in the holes, covered with soil, and can be planted at any time, morning or evening. However, there is one taboo that is always observed: the planter must not turn their back to the sun. Local belief holds that doing so can stunt the seedling’s growth; thus, the position of the sun always serves as a guide.

The tools used remain simple—machetes, axes, or wooden poles. Heavy machinery is rarely used because the terrain is difficult to access, and the community believes traditional methods are better suited to the natural environment.

Spacing and Maintenance

Generally, the spacing between seedlings is set at approximately 6 x 6 meters, though it may vary between 4–8 meters depending on the land conditions. While some believe that spacing does not significantly impact growth, the choice of location remains the primary determinant of harvest success and sago productivity.

Traditional Care: The critical maintenance period lasts for the first two years, until the plant produces about seven fronds. During this stage, the community routinely:

  • Clears weeds.
  • Replaces seedlings that fail to grow (penyulaman).
  • Adds natural fertilizer in the form of decaying wood as a source of organic matter.

For the residents of Sembaro Village, planting and caring for sago is not just about food security; it is about preserving identity and ancestral heritage. Through these practices, sago is maintained as a source of life to be passed on to future generations.
