Utilization of Sago Bark as a Base Material for Road Construction

The Government of Meranti Islands Regency has recently introduced a new policy mandating the use of sago bark as one of the foundation materials in all road construction projects within the region.

This policy was established as a solution to the large volume of sago bark waste generated by approximately 60 operating sago factories. Each day, tens of tons of sago bark and pulp accumulate, which were previously often discarded without proper processing, leading to environmental concerns.

This innovation was first tested by PT RAPP through the construction of a 12-kilometer road in Tasik Putripuyu District. The results proved to be effective, prompting the adoption of the same method across various other road sections in the area.

According to the Head of the Public Works Department of Meranti Islands Regency, H. Herman, the application of sago bark as a road foundation material not only enhances road durability but also represents a concrete step toward the development of more environmentally sustainable infrastructure.
