Physical Characteristics and Spatial Profile of the Sago Plantation
Sago palms are typically found in swampy lowlands, where they are far more dominant than in areas along riverbanks. They grow best at elevations below 400 meters above sea level. Once they exceed this altitude, growth slows and productivity declines. At elevations higher than 600 meters, sago palms generally reach only about 6 meters in height and develop noticeably smaller trunks.
In general, sago thrives in flat terrain or on gentle slopes with gradients between 0 and 3 percent. Even so, the plant is still capable of growing on steeper slopes above 3 percent, although only in limited patches. A sago tree begins producing starch once it reaches a height of approximately 6 to 18 meters.
Geographically, sago plantations in East Seram Regency lie within the coordinates 646066 mT and 9662103 mU to 646940 mT and 9662070 mU. The plantation covers an area of 50 hectares—25 hectares developed during the 2016 planning phase (stage I) and another 25 hectares during the 2019 planning phase (stage II).
The plantation landscape includes several types of land cover such as sago forest, grasslands, shrubs, water hyacinth zones, and two categories of mixed forest. The sago forest in this area is highly uniform, with sago serving as the dominant vegetation type. Swamp grasses and water hyacinth cover roughly 3.64 hectares, making them the most commonly encountered land cover in the area.
Shrublands, spanning 1.51 hectares, typically emerge in locations where sago forest has been degraded. These areas commonly feature species such as sago, samama, kinar, and marsegu wood. Swamp grasses and water hyacinth tend to become inundated during the rainy season, as they grow in depressions or low-lying basins.
The sago forest itself covers 15.36 hectares of the plantation. Mixed forest category I, covering 12.92 hectares, comprises vegetation such as kinar trees, pandanus, ketapang, marsegu, and sago, while the lower strata are dominated by ferns. Meanwhile, mixed forest category II, the broader of the two at 18.99 hectares, features similar vegetation but also includes species like redwood, rattan, kenari, birdwood, and black belo. In this area, sago appears only sporadically.
