Consumption Patterns of Sago Plantation Workers
Eating habits or food consumption patterns can be defined as an overview of the types, quantities, and frequencies of food consumed by individuals or specific community groups on a daily basis over a certain period of time.
According to the General Guidelines for the Development of National Food Consumption, a food consumption pattern refers to the average composition of foods—including the quantity and types of food items—consumed per person per day over a specific time frame.
Food consumption patterns in a community are shaped by multiple factors, such as economic conditions, educational level, cultural background, lifestyle, food availability, and social values. In some cases, prestige also becomes a determining factor in the choice of food, even though decisions are generally influenced by religion, knowledge, and accessibility. To analyze these consumption patterns, structured interviews were conducted with respondents at the research site.
The results of the consumption pattern analysis are typically presented as percentages based on the types of food consumed. In this study, four primary consumption patterns were identified:
- Consuming sago only.
- Consuming sago, tubers, and bananas.
- Consuming sago, tubers, bananas, and rice.
- Consuming rice only.
The most dominant consumption pattern is the combination of sago, tubers, bananas, and rice, accounting for 52% of all respondents. This is largely due to the high diversity of locally available foods such as sago, tubers, and bananas. Additionally, rice needs are well met due to the continued implementation of the subsidized rice program for low-income households (raskin).
Meanwhile, 16% of the community still relies on sago as their primary staple food, and another 22% consume a combination of sago, tubers, and bananas. These patterns are commonly found among older residents in rural areas. In contrast, 10% of respondents—mostly wet-rice farmers—consume rice exclusively, as they are less familiar with how to process tubers, sago, and bananas.
